Hi! My name's Anna and I am the owner/designer/maker and everything else behind House Of Bats.
I have always been rather darkly inclined, fascinated by all things gothic and macabre and finding beauty in the shadows. I'm also one of those people who gets an image in their head of something they would like, and then is frustrated when they can't find it available to buy - so the natural solution of course is to make it myself! I have been making and amending clothes and accessories from being a cash-strapped teenager, following the old punk and goth traditions of altering clothes to have something truly unique.
I spent many years trying to work the standard 9-5 office job, and was thoroughly miserable! In 2013 I had a complete mental breakdown, and after a difficult recovery I decided that I had to live my life by my own rules, and so I took voluntary redundancy from my office job and set up House Of Bats in 2014.
The name House Of Bats comes from my nickname, Anna Bat, which was given to me by my friends who would see me walking down the cobbled streets of West Yorkshire with my long black velvet coat billowing behind me and say I looked like a giant bat!
It is important to me that my business reflects my own values, so that I can feel satisfied with the work I put out into the world and know that I am helping to improve rather than destroy. For this reason, I only use vegan-friendly materials, and use fully recycled acrylic to create my designs. All of the packaging is from recycled materials, even down to the stickers. I also give 10% of House Of Bats profits to The Sophie Lancaster Foundation, which campaigns tirelessly to educate young people about all kinds of discrimination and works across political lines to help bring more effective anti hate crime legislation. You can read more about the charity here.
I run House Of Bats full time from my studio in Leeds, making everything by hand and using a laser cutter. I can often be found here singing (screeching) loudly to Siouxsie and the Banshees while mainlining biscuits and yelling at the printer.
I would love to have you join our batty family - follow House Of Bats on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, or sign up to our mailing list where we will even give you a discount on your first order!
